Tax Calculation Formula

TaxNinja calculates your federal self-employment tax estimate in five sequential steps. Each step builds on the previous one.

Step 1 โ€” Net Profit

Your gross freelance (1099) income minus your Schedule C business deductions.

Net Profit = Gross Income โˆ’ Total Deductions

Step 2 โ€” Self-Employment Tax

The IRS allows self-employed workers to deduct the employer-equivalent portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes. This is a 7.65% adjustment, leaving 92.35% of net profit subject to the 15.3% SE tax rate (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare). (IRS Publication 505)

SE Tax = Net Profit ร— 0.9235 ร— 0.153

Step 3 โ€” SE Tax Deduction (Above-the-Line)

The IRS allows you to deduct half of your self-employment tax from your gross income before calculating income tax. This is reported on Schedule 1, Line 15 of Form 1040.

SE Tax Deduction = SE Tax ร— 0.50

Step 4 โ€” Taxable Income

Subtract the SE tax deduction and the standard deduction from net profit to arrive at your federal taxable income. For 2026, the standard deduction is $15,000 for Single filers and $30,000 for Married Filing Jointly.

Taxable Income = Net Profit โˆ’ SE Tax Deduction โˆ’ Standard Deduction

Step 5 โ€” Federal Income Tax

Federal income tax is calculated by applying the 2026 IRS marginal tax brackets to taxable income. The brackets are progressive: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. Each bracket's rate applies only to income within that bracket's range.

Federal Income Tax = ฮฃ(taxable income in each bracket ร— bracket rate)

Your total estimated tax is the sum of Self-Employment Tax (Step 2) and Federal Income Tax (Step 5).
