Why TaxNinja Is Completely Free

73 million US freelancers deserve a free, honest tax tool. No paywalls. No account required. No data sold. Here's exactly how TaxNinja works and why we built it this way.

✦

Free Forever

TaxNinja has been free since day one and will stay that way. No freemium tier. No trial period. No credit card ever required.

📰

Ad-Supported

TaxNinja displays Google AdSense ads. That's it. Ads pay the bills so freelancers never have to. You use the tool, advertisers pay for it.

🔒

Zero Data Collected

We don't sell your data because we don't have your data. Everything runs in your browser. We genuinely cannot see your numbers.

Here's Exactly How TaxNinja Makes Money

Let's be direct. TaxNinja displays ads from Google AdSense. When you use TaxNinja, you'll see ad banners on the page — typically a leaderboard ad at the top and a sidebar ad on desktop. Those ads generate a small amount of revenue per visit. That revenue covers the cost of running the site: domain, hosting, development, and maintenance.

Why Ads Instead of a Subscription?

We looked at what freelancers actually need and what they're willing to pay for. The answer was uncomfortable: most freelancers don't want to pay $9/month for a tax calculator they use twice a year. And honestly, they shouldn't have to.

TurboTax Self-Employed charges $169 to file. QuickBooks Self-Employed charges $15/month. H&R Block charges $85+. That's real money for people who are already navigating the complexity of self-employment taxes alone.

Ads let us keep TaxNinja free for everyone while still keeping the lights on. It's not a perfect model but it's an honest one.

Do the Ads Affect My Experience?

We've tried to keep ads in places that don't interrupt the calculation flow. You won't see pop-ups, auto-playing video ads, or ads inside the calculator itself. The ads are in the margins — not in the middle of your tax estimate.

If you find an ad genuinely intrusive or inappropriate, email us at contact@taxninja.site and we'll look into it.

Does Google See My Tax Data Because of the Ads?

No. Google AdSense serves ads based on general page context and browser cookies — not based on data you enter into TaxNinja. TaxNinja's calculator runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No data you type into any input field is ever sent to Google, to us, or to anyone.

Google may set a cookie to remember ad preferences. That's covered in our Privacy Policy. But your income, deductions, and tax estimates are never part of that.

Why TaxNinja Doesn't Require an Account

Most financial tools require an account because accounts give them something valuable: your data, your email for marketing, and a reason to charge you a subscription.

TaxNinja doesn't want any of that.

Creating an account means giving us your email. Giving us your email means we can market to you. Marketing to you costs you time and attention. We decided that wasn't the relationship we wanted with freelancers.

There's also a practical reason: the tax calculations TaxNinja provides are estimates for planning purposes. They're not official tax records. There's no reason to store them permanently in a database under your name.

What Happens to My Data When I Leave?

When you close TaxNinja or your browser tab, your financial data is automatically cleared. We also clear it after 30 minutes of inactivity as a security measure.

Nothing is ever sent to a server. Everything you entered exists only in your browser's temporary memory while the tab is open.

This is genuinely different from how most financial tools work. TurboTax stores your return data. Mint stores your bank transactions. TaxNinja stores nothing — not because we can't, but because we chose not to.

Can I Save My Results?

Yes — use the Download as PDF button on the results page to save a copy of your tax estimate. That PDF lives on your device, under your control. We never see it or store it.

TaxNinja's Three Commitments to Freelancers

✓

Always free for every freelancer

TaxNinja will never introduce a paid tier, a subscription, or a paywall on any of its core tools. The Tax Calculator, Deduction Finder, and Quarterly Estimator are free — permanently.

✓

Never sell or share your data

We have no financial incentive to sell your data because we don't have your data. The only third-party with any access to cookies on this site is Google AdSense for ad serving — and even they don't receive your financial inputs.

✓

Honest about what this is

TaxNinja is a tax estimation tool. It is not a tax preparer, a CPA firm, or a substitute for professional advice. We say this clearly on every page because we think you deserve to know exactly what you're using.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions About How TaxNinja Works

TaxNinja is genuinely free. The tool is supported by Google AdSense advertising — the same ad network used by millions of websites including major news outlets. You use the tool, advertisers pay for the ad space, TaxNinja stays free. There is no premium version, no subscription tier, and no credit card required — ever.

TaxNinja displays Google AdSense banner ads on the page. When visitors view or click those ads, TaxNinja earns a small amount of advertising revenue. This revenue covers domain costs, hosting, and development. The ads are placed in the margins of the page — not inside the calculator tool itself.

We considered it. The problem is that even a small fee creates friction that stops people from using the tool — especially freelancers who only need it once or twice a year. A tool that nobody uses helps nobody. Ads let us remove that barrier entirely while still covering costs.

No. TaxNinja cannot sell your financial data because it never receives it. Every calculation runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your income figures, deductions, and tax estimates never leave your device. There is no server receiving this information.

Because accounts create data, and data creates responsibility and temptation. We decided from the beginning that TaxNinja would not store personal financial records under user accounts. You get a better privacy outcome, and we avoid the complexity of managing sensitive financial databases.

Google AdSense may set a browser cookie to serve relevant ads based on your general browsing history — this is standard for any site using AdSense. Google does not receive the income or tax figures you enter into TaxNinja. You can opt out of personalized ads at google.com/settings/ads.

That is our intention and our commitment. TaxNinja was built on the premise that every freelancer deserves a free, accurate tax estimation tool. We have no plans to introduce a subscription or paywall. If that ever changed, we would announce it clearly in advance.

TaxNinja was built because 73 million US freelancers face a genuinely confusing tax situation — self-employment tax, quarterly payments, Schedule C deductions — with tools that either cost too much or require giving up too much personal information. TaxNinja exists to fix that. Simply, honestly, and for free.
